Most school trousers fall into three waist styles. Here is how they differ and who each one suits, so the pair you buy still fits at Christmas.
Fully elasticated pull-on
The waistband stretches all the way around and there are no zips, hooks or buttons. Best for younger children, for anyone who dresses independently, and for children with sensory needs who find fastenings fiddly or labels itchy. Our boys' pull-on trousers and girls' jersey trousers use this style. It also gives the most room to grow.
Adjustable waist
An internal elastic strap with a button lets you take the waist in or out by several centimetres while the outside keeps a smart, flat-fronted look. Best for school-age children who are between sizes or growing quickly, and for a tidy appearance with a shirt tucked in. Most of our regular-fit boys' trousers are adjustable.
Regular (fixed) fit
A set waist with a zip and hook-and-bar, like adult trousers. Best for older students who have stopped growing rapidly and want a tailored look. Measure carefully, as there is no adjustment.
Which should I buy?
- Ages 2–7: fully elasticated pull-on.
- Ages 7–12: adjustable waist – the most forgiving as they grow.
- Ages 13+: adjustable or regular fit, depending on build.
Other things that matter
Look for reinforced knees for durability, a stain-resistant finish (Teflon-treated fabric releases mud and food marks in the wash), and a flat-back waistband for comfort when sitting all day. If your child is between sizes, size up and adjust in. Buying a two-pack usually costs less per pair. See the full range in Back to School.
